Concepts for distributed groupware operating systems

چکیده
The majority of today’s complex development and consulting projects involve various locations and distributed project organisation. One part of the project team usually works at the customer’s location in order to analyse requirements, specify system functionality, or present project results. Another, smaller part of the team is located in the »back office«, supporting the other workers. In development projects, back office takes care of preparing and configurating hardware, negotiating contracts with sub-contractors, planning sub-projects etc. Consulting projects use back office support for all kinds of paperwork: documentation of results, preparation of transparencies for workshops, evaluation and comparison of new technologies, discussions with experts, etc. Due to their distributed character, such projects involve a significant degree of group work, thus requiring flexible and dynamically configurable mechanisms for communication, cooperation and coordination. Similar requirements can also be identified in distributed organisations with virtual business units or large project teams.

Visual Navigation of Distributed Knowledge Structures in Groupware-Based Organizational Memories
Many of today's organizations already have a strong integration of groupware systems in their ITinfrastructure. The shared databases of these groupware systems form organizational memories, which comprise the complete knowledge of an organization collected over the time of its existence. One key problem is how to find relevant knowledge in continuously growing and distributed organizational mem...

متن کاملUsing the COOPN / 2 Formal Method for Groupware Systems Engineering #
A BSTRACT . COOPN/2 (Concurrent Object Oriented Petri Nets) is an object-oriented specification formalism based on Petri Nets and algebraic specifications. It is fully adapted to the specification of complex concurrent systems because it inherits the advantages of algebraic specifications for the specification of abstract data types, from Petri nets to describe partially ordered events and from...
متن کاملRecent Developments in Discrete Event Systems
This article is a brief exposure of the process approach to a newly emerging area called "discrete event systems" in control theory and summarizes some of the recent developments in this area. Discrete event systems is an area of research that is developing within the interstices of computer, control and communication sciences. The basic direction of research addresses issues in the analysis an...
متن کاملBeyond the LAN: Techniques from Networked Games for Improving Groupware Performance
The goal of real-time distributed groupware is to support synchronous work at a distance, but if these systems are to succeed, they must find ways to deal with real-world network issues more effectively. One rich area that can provide network techniques for groupware is network gaming: network games have more than a decade of experience building collaborative applications that perform well on t...
